Rockin' Huckabee
Sunday October 21, 2007
The Gov. appeared on the Glenn Beck Show Friday evening for a full hour of questions and answers. It was/is a tremendous opportunity to hear Huck give full answers and expound on various matters concerning his run for the Presidency.
Beck is among the core of mainstream conservative pundits/commentators who have been no friend of the Gov. This lot continues to this day to worship at the feet of the "Big Three" candidates -- Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson. His interview style is less than deferential, I believe he showed more respect to Dog the Bounty Hunter when he was on.
But Huck handled him well and towards the end of the interview, Beck mentioned that he was disappointed because he had hoped to write the Gov. off as a candidate, but was now much impressed.
It is well worth watching. CNN usually replays the Friday edition of Beck's show Sunday evening at 7:00pm eastern. If you get the chance, and are a fan/supporter of the Gov. it is must watch television.
Also:
My apologies for not updating this blog as frequently the past couple of days. I've been having difficulties loading this page, possibly because of my firewall. I've missed a lot of action, and if you've been coming here for Huck news, I've let you down. I think I've got things straightened out and I'll be back posting things I've missed the last couple of days.
Thanks
Update:
Nope, they are replaying a show from earlier in the week. Sorry | | Posted by postaldog at 2:06 PM -

NEWS RELEASE
MIKE HUCKABEE DOMINATES VALUES VOTER SUMMIT IN WASHINGTON , D.C.
Former AR Governor Enjoys 5:1 Victory over GOP Rival in On-site Contest
LITTLE ROCK, AR – Former AR Governor and Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee proved today that he is “favorite son of conservative voters,” placing first place in a “Values Voter” Straw Poll among attendees of the Family Research Council’s Summit in Washington, D.C.
Huckabee was the No. 1 favorite among the 952 attendees the summit and voted in person, with 51 percent of the vote – defeating rival Mitt Romney who received just 10 percent of the vote.
The results are as follows:
1.) Mike Huckabee - 488 - 51.26%
2.) Mitt Romney – 99 – 10.40%
3.) Fred Thompson – 77 – 8.09%
4.) Tom Tancredo – 65 – 6.83%
“Today’s victory in the on-site contest is yet another indicator that I am the top choice of voters in America who are looking for a truly consistent, conservative candidate with a proven record of results and the vision to lead America forward,” said Huckabee.
Huckabee, who had 11 standing ovations during a rousing speech today before an enthusiastic audience, espoused his “non-negotiable” priorities for America – “freedom, faith and family.” After the speech, he finished just 30 votes behind Mitt Romney in a straw poll which included online polling.
“I said today that I am someone who comes not to the faith community, but from the faith community,” Huckabee said. “These results show that, among voters who place values at the forefront of their choice of presidential candidates, I am understood and recognized as a top tier candidate. That’s very encouraging,” he said.
“In fact, I predict that, when conservative voters put me alongside the other candidates in a head-to-head comparison, they will see the differences between us – and propel my campaign to victory in January in the Iowa Caucuses,” said Huckabee.

The Gov. is fond of saying that he prefers being quarry as that means he is active and is scaring his opponents. It looks like he will get his wish in spades as articles banging on Huck are becoming more prevalent.
Two articles appear today, one at The Politico.com by Jonathan Martin plays up the statements from Christian Conservative leaders that they don't support the Gov. because they don't believe he can win the presidency. It is rightly deemed a Christian Catch-22:
". . .He simply can’t win, they say."
"But do prominent Christian conservative leaders ensure that outcome when, instead of supporting one of their own and shepherding others to support him, they hold out for a better option or settle for an imperfect — if ostensibly more electable — candidate?"
The other article is in the Boston Globe by Susan Mulligan who brings up the Wayne Dumond case and posits that it will be an albatross around the Gov's neck:
". . .convicted rapist Wayne Dumond, who continues to haunt Huckabee's burgeoning presidential campaign.
"Huckabee, whose self-deprecating humor and easy candor have charmed many on the campaign trail, bristles when asked about the case, in which Dumond. . ."
"If Huckabee, who is creeping upward in the polls, gains more momentum, the case is certain to become an issue. Stevens [the rape victim] said she is prepared to campaign actively against him if he becomes a serious candidates for president or vice president."
"And the Dumond case is likely to reemerge, dredging up not only the gruesome details of the attacks but the complicated political connections. Stevens, the rape victim, is a distant cousin of Bill Clinton. When he was Arkansas governor, Clinton refused requests to reduce Dumond's sentence. But while Clinton was off campaigning for president in 1992, his lieutenant governor, Jim Guy Tucker, commuted Dumond's sentence to 39 1/2 years, making Dumond eligible for parole."
Overlooked in both these pieces is the flip side to their detractions. Despite the modest fundraising and lack of support of the Christian Coalition types, the Gov. is in third place in the Iowa polls and has been moving up steadily while other candidates are dropping of leveling off. So who is running the better campaign? The guy spending millions and getting nothing to show for it or the guy managing his resources to optimize his campaign and get continued positive results?
While the Wayne Dumond case is tragic, the reporter fails to mention that the Gov. signed more death warrants during his term as Gov. than anyone in Arkansas history. The case is indeed complicated, but don't expect fair treatment from the press which is pushing hard for a Rudy/Hillary contest. And expect plenty of noise from the Clintons when Huck ascends completely into the top tier of candidates.

Update:
Just to show that it's not just me saying this, here's a quote from an article at DesMoinesRegister.com by David Yepsen yesterday:
On the GOP side, Mike Huckabee has moved into third place among GOPers in the Iowa Poll. Huckabee is solidifying support of social conservatives, without being mean about it - or scaring away moderates. His good humor is worth a lot too. Want proof he's moving up? Anonymous e-mails trying to savage him are starting to make the rounds.

The following is a posting on Huck's website from Jim Cooper, President of the Arkansas Health Care Association and is in response to the repeated slams against the Gov. for alleged callousness in taxing nursing home beds from agenda-driven groups like Club for Growth.
With all due respect to my fellow fiscal conservative advocates, as President of the Arkansas Health Care Association during Governor Huckabee’s tenure, I wish to dispel criticisms of the provider tax that was initiated for the Arkansas nursing home program.
Governor Huckabee’s position should be considered as one that saved Arkansans from huge tax increases. Let me put the situation in perspective.
For over 20 years prior to the governor’s tenure, Arkansas paid for its nursing home program through a "negotiated" illegal class rate. The hammer was coming down on the entire program. Federal law requires a nexus between the rate and the cost of the care. Arkansas’ state government is required to operate with a balanced budget. For over 20 years the nursing home program survived with minuscule rate increases based largely on how much money could be negotiated in the final state budget. To compound the problem our class rate for nursing home care had fallen to an average of less than $64.00 per patient day which created a short fall of over $12.00 per patient day. Governor Huckabee’s administration, legislators, consumer advocates, and nursing home owners all agreed that care was sub-par, jeopardizing the entire Medicaid program.
Most suggested the old tax and spend philosophy. Raise income or sales taxes to fix the problem. Growth was not an option because there is a finite number of nursing homes and nursing home patients. A soft drink tax had been passed a few years before to prop up the Medicaid program.
The industry and key legislators brought the provider tax concept forth. It was agreed on by the Huckabee administration only after assurances were made for accountability and an entirely new payment methodology was implemented. The tax was placed on total receipts for nursing homes. I could explain in greater detail if asked.
Out of 228 nursing homes in Arkansas only 3 are private pay (that is, they refuse to admit patients who receive federal or state subsidies). These homes were opposed to the provider tax because Federal Law requires all providers be taxed the same. A wide-ranging group of legislators and Governor Huckabee agreed to raise additional Medicaid dollars with the provider tax increasing the matching 3 to 1 federal dollars for nursing homes. Without this solution we would have been faced with huge tax increases for the entire state of Arkansas or the entire Medicaid program in Arkansas could have been decertified.
I would be happy to answer any questions.
Sincerely,
Jim Cooper
President
