Rockin' Huckabee

 More poll results

New poll results today from USA Election Polls showing the standings in Texas. The results:

Fred Thompson - 25%
Rudy Giuliani - 21%
Mitt Romney - 15%
Mike Huckabee - 13%

Their comments:
IVR Polls has just released a Texas poll taken at the end of August and it finds that Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani are at the top while Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are in a strong position just behind them.

Mike Huckabee's strong showing here is pretty significant when you consider that he has doubled his support according to the last Texas poll by IVR Polls.

Also of note is the fact that Newt Gingrich's group American Solutions has picked up on the Gov's letter to Fred Thompson.

Huck tells Fred? to bring it on

Demand that Mike Huckabee come speak in your city.

The Gov. has respectfully challenged fellow candidate Fred Thompson to exactly what he wished for -- a one-on-one debate ala Lincoln/Douglas. Text of the letter is below:

September 7, 2007

The Honorable Fred Thompson
1130 Eighth Avenue South
Nashville, TN 37203

Dear Senator Thompson,

Welcome to the 2008 Presidential race. I look forward to seeing you on the trail in the upcoming days, weeks, and months ahead.

I share your view of the debates and agree that Newt's "Nine Nineties in Nine" concept is a far better way to make sure America's next President has the character and capacity to lead our nation forward, and that's why I have already signed that pledge. I agree that what is needed is a real discussion by the candidates about their vision for the future of our country.

The debates so far have not offered an in-depth discussion on critical issues such as health care, education, energy independence, in addition to terrorism and national security.

I am aware of your comments on Fox News that you would like to participate in a series of Lincoln Douglas-styled debates. I would like to officially accept your offer and look forward to working with your staff to schedule this. I would suggest we start this series in New Hampshire.

At the end of these debates, the American people will know each candidate far greater and would be able to choose which candidate possesses the depth of knowledge on the issues and has the character and capacity to lead or great nation. More importantly, the American people would be able to rely on a true conversation on the issues, instead of just 30-second ads and soundbites to decide which candidate has the right vision for America's future.

Senator, let's lead by example and get the ball rolling. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this idea and debating you in front of the American people.

Sincerely,

Mike Huckabee
Former Governor of Arkansas (1996-2007)

 What they are saying

Here's some reaction from last night's Presidential debate:

Huckabee also had a good night. He correctly ducked a hypothetical question about what, precisely, he would do in response to a nuclear Iran. And he looked presidential when he stood up to Ron Paul's badgering about the need to immediately get out of Iraq.

Like McCain, Huckabee probably will move up in some polls of Republican voters with his work Wednesday night.

Ahead of even Giuliani and Romney as the most consistent guardian of the image he wants to project — warm, principled, and visionary. Brilliant opening pander to New Hampshire, joking that he gave up a chance to appear on Jay Leno's show tonight (Fred Thompson, of course, was Leno's newsmaking guest) to be in the debate. Paid gracious homage to McCain's military service as part of a stirring answer on Iraq, and then challenged on Ron Paul on the war. Still, did more to elevate the Huck-for-veep talk than keep his Ames straw poll momentum going.

This was an open thread during the debate, I nabbed some of the comments that related to Huck. Remember, this is a group that has not been overly friendly to the Gov. so far.

GO HUCKABEE!

D*mn, Huck. Great answer.
Spirit of 1776 on September 5, 2007 at 9:52 PM

I’m not completely sure that we broke Iraq…but I do believe that we need to leave with honor. Way to go Huck.
Paul is a freaking idiot.
nailinmyeye on September 5, 2007 at 9:52 PM

Yeah, but Huck has some good points, AND can lay down a phat beat on bass.

Huck hammers him AGAIN! The left jab and the right cross!
Spirit of 1776 on September 5, 2007 at 9:52 PM

Mike Huckabee framed the answer on abortion most eloquently.

Huck vs Paul, the knockdown drag out..

commonsensehoosier on September 5, 2007 at 9:55 PM

Huck just shot up about 1000 points with that quote.
And taking on Paul himself in front of his goons.
Way to go, Huck!
HYTEAndy on September 5, 2007 at 9:55 PM

Huck, baby. Huck!
yo on September 5, 2007 at 10:33 PM

Outside of Huck bashing Paul on the ropes, you might just be right.
Spirit of 1776 on September 5, 2007 at 10:34 PM

Not necessarily.
Huckabee said, earlier in the debate, that whether going into Iraq was right or wrong was going to be debated by historians for years to come, but that in going into Iraq, we “broke it.” I think it was a poor choice of words, but I agree with what he said earlier in the debate, which is basically: we cannot leave Iraq at this moment with honor.

Here's the salient highlight from the debate last night, the Gov. laying the smackdown on Ron Paul over the war in Iraq.
