Rockin' Huckabee

 New widgets

They've got a couple of new widgets at Huck's website. One is a donation widget, the other is for networking. I may have the code wrong as the donation one does not come up properly, but the networking one does.

I'm putting up the network widget below. The only problem I've found is that it won't come up unless I disable my firewall. I've seen that problem before, with banners and such. I'm not enough of a geek to know if it's a cookie thing or what. If I can figure a way to fix it, I will. If you aren't having a problem with it then no biggie.

Hah! Fixed it. I rule!

 Some nice stuff

There's a nice blurb in the Boston Globe today showcasing the Gov's support for music education in schools, something that the MTV crowd should love.

"Huckabee's home state of Arkansas offers evidence of what can be done. A 2005 state law requires elementary schools to offer 40 minutes per week of music and art. The state's high schools are required to offer fine arts courses, including visual arts, music, and dance. To graduate from high school, students are required to take half a year of one of these."

" Huckabee calls the arts and music 'weapons of mass instruction.' If education touches only one side of the brain, he recently told the Globe editorial board, then it's just 'a data download.' Rather, schools should use art and music to develop both the left and right sides of students' brains, and to translate and transmit culture."

A couple of nice quotes from a South Carolina website GoUpstate.com in an article by Jason Spencer on the Gov.

On the party's direction or lack thereof:
While most candidates who come through here attack the opposing party, Huckabee mentioned several times that Republicans had lost their way, that "Those of us in this room came to be Republicans not out of convenience, but out of conviction," and called Congress "polarized, paralyzed and out of touch with the American people."

and this:
"We don't want the government to do something for us. We just want the government to stop doing things to us."

On our global ambitions:
"We cannot be the police force for the world," Huckabee told reporters afterward. "And we should not export our form of government. Instead, we should create an appetite for our form of government so that other countries want to adopt it."

The Gov's turn of a founding father's phrase:
Huckabee recounted his upbringing in a low-income household in Hope, Ark., and said, "I'll make my fair share of mistakes. But I won't forget where I came from. ... People don't elect a president to be a king. They elect a president to be on his knees, a servant to the people." -- my favorite

Pretty good stuff, read the entire article here:

 Zogby/Newsmax poll

I can't confirm this yet, just saw it on another website, but a Zogby/Newsmax poll of potential Iowa caucus voters has the Gov. passing John McCain into fourth place.

Results:
Romney- 33% (19)
Giuliani- 14% (18)
Thompson- 12% (9)
Huckabee- 8% (2)
McCain- 6% (18)

Numbers in parenthesis are from May. The poll has a +/- 4.5% margin of error, so take them with a grain of salt.

 Debates

Back in February of this year, Newt Gingrich proposed a new debate forum called "Nine Nineties in Nine", which was actually an old debate style.

His proposal was for nine ninety minute debates in the nine weeks leading up to the general election in 2008. The debates would be substance-focused, and free of the "sound byte" style of current debates. A refreshing change and the chance to listen to the candidates actually explain themselves and hear how they would respond in a lively exchange of ideas.

Only one candidate has formally accepted Newt's proposal.

Mike Huckabee

Are you really surprised?

Update:
Article in the LA Times by Newt Gingrich explains the debates referenced above.

 The politico

Decent article at politico.com today by Jonathan Martin talking about how the Gov. is going to have to take the gloves off as the campaign heats up. Not sure I agree with that, or Martin's suggestion that Huck is banging elbows more, but there are some good new quotes in there that make it worth reading.

On the Gov.'s consistant conservative stance:
“Here's a guy who didn't just become pro-life to run for president," Huckabee said of himself at a dinner of 100 Republicans gathered here last week for spaghetti and meatballs and political rhetoric. "Here's a guy who didn't just read the latest issue of NRA magazine and decide he's going to be for the Second Amendment."

On Huck's broader appeal:
His “different kind of conservative” shtick has tickled the fancy of some political observers who are enthused at the exotic prospect of a Southern Baptist preacher who talks more animatedly about the wealth gap and protecting the environment than he does about conservative stand-bys such as abortion equating to the taking of human life and homosexuality being immoral.

Properly noting the niche Huck fills:
For Huckabee, the goal is obvious. He’s seeking to appeal to conservative activists in the early primary states who find Rudy Giuliani and John McCain too moderate, are still waiting on (or have grown impatient with) Fred Thompson, and are skeptical of Romney’s shift to the right and put off by the lack of dirt under his fingernails.

All in all, a decent article by a site that has been friendly to the Gov. from the outset. Read the entire article here:

Also an article at newsday.com by James P. Pinkerton titled -- A Republican that can lead us back home. Nothing particularly quote worthy, but a pleasant write up and more ink for the Gov.

Hitwise.com has rankings of the various Republican candidate's webpages according to traffic. I'm only listing the top three because actually only numbers two and three matter. Anyone who has followed this pre-primary action knows that Ron Paul's supporters are notorious for artificially inflating numbers on dial-in/call-in/web-vote forums. Here are the numbers:
Ron Paul - 36.95%
Mitt Romney - 23.41%
Mike Huckabee - 15.98%

Here is their statement of statistical procedure:
Note - the Hitwise data is based on a custom category of Republican presidential candidates who have officially announced their candidacy ranked by US market share of visits, which is the percentage of online traffic to the domain or category, from the Hitwise sample of 10 million US Internet users. Hitwise measures more than 1 million unique websites on a daily basis, including sub-domains of larger websites. Hitwise categorizes websites into industries on the basis of subject matter and content, as well as market orientation and competitive context.
