Rockin' Huckabee

 Hmmm, this sounds vaguely familiar

So I drop by the Human Events webpage to see what's up and I look down at the bottom on the right. There is a section for bestselling books. The second book is about the FairTax. Where have I heard of that before? Oh yeah, Huck made it an integral part of his campaign platform -- tax relief for the country. Remember the response? I do. He was ridiculed, the plan was attacked by everyone, including columnists at Human Events. Now it's on their bestseller list. Wierd, huh?

Then this -- last week I caught part of Glenn Beck's show. Personally, I think he's an ass, but if he has someone interesting on, I'll tune in for a bit. But here's Glenn ranting about fuel prices and yelling at the camera "Where's our moonshot?" for gas prices. And going on about how we need to address energy independence immediately. Hmmm, I'm getting that deja vu feeling again. Oh yeah, it was Gov. Huckabee that kept saying he would push for energy independence in seven years. Gov. Huckabee saying we shouldn't be giving all our money to the Saudis so they can breed terrorists. And what was the response? Same as before, everyone ridiculed him. Called him naive and unrealistic.

I say, these idiots have the wrong Republican running for president. Way to go, knuckleheads!

Captain Ed throws Huck under the bus yet again

I lost a lot of respect for Ed Morrissey during the primaries. His website Captain's Quarters was a very influential blog for conservatives. He festooned the site with a variety of Huck08 banners and links, making it appear as though he supported the Gov's campaign.

Yet he continually posted items that spurred his readers to attack the Gov, often with unfounded and completely mis-interpreted or mis-represented facts. He allowed those attacks to go on without moderation. Eventually, Ed came out in support of flip-flopper Mitt Romney because . . . I don't know . . . I guess he just looked so darn presidential. It surely couldn't have been because Romney changed positions on every single platform item of concern to conservatives.

Now Ed is at HotAir with that other anti-Huck blogger, Allahpundit, and the attacks continue even though the Gov is not running for office.

In a lead story today, Ed claims the Gov. says that diabetes is worse than terrorism. To support that ridiculous headline, he quotes from blogger jammiewearingfool's story. Here's a bit from the quote:

"Nearly 59 million Americans are at risk for type 2 diabetes. The former Arkansas governor said the epidemic would be “the lead story” across the country if tens of millions were in danger of terrorist attacks."

and this:

"“The greatest challenge to America may not be something from without, it may be something from within,” Huckabee said. “It’s our own unhealthy habits.”"

Now maybe it's just me, but do you see where Huck has said that diabetes is worse than terrorism? Yeah me neither. But that doesn't stop Ed from going on a several paragraph rant about the Gov. To wit:

"He told the audience that diabetes presents a bigger threat to Americans than terrorism, which is both true and utterly pointless at the same time." Then this: "...diabetes control isn’t a primary responsibility of the federal government."

He finishes up with this condescending bit:

"The federal government has a Constitutional responsibility to protect us from attack, terrorist or otherwise. The people themselves have responsibility for managing illnesses and maintaining their health. Huckabee forgot the distinction at times during the campaign, sounding more like a nanny-state politician bent on imposing health-related mandates at the federal level, and it sounds like he still hasn’t learned the difference."

Now I ask again, where is he getting this from? Certainly not from what the Gov. said. Ed has heard what he wanted to hear filtered through his own prejudices. Huck sent him an e-mail afterward to clarify his position -- that he wanted citizens to take personal responsibility for their own health -- that he never said diabetes was worse than terrorism.

Ed's response was to brush off Huck's e-mail and complain that Huck shouldn't have even used the word "terrorism" because it confuses people. I don't know, it didn't confuse me.

Maybe Ed's just so caught up in his own little world of prejudice and conspiracy that he can't come to an objective conclusion about anything. After all this is the same guy who posted a blog on the site about store mannequins and thought there was some insidious plot behind their appearance.

 More on "Recount"

So I contacted Eric Deggans about his review of Recount, because unlike some bloggers, I'm not afraid to chat folks up personally. If I've got an opinion, I'm willing to let you know what it is. Trust me, I took plenty of abuse sticking up for Huck on the various conservative blogs that were savaging him regularly.

Anyway, Eric and I had a nice little back and forth about the movie, the motives for making it, and what I perceive as a liberal slant to the production.

In his last e-mail to me, he mentions that James Baker worked as an advisor on the movie. He helped with the script, verifies the accuracy of the street fight nature of the Republican strategies and stands behind the accuracy of the film. He even hosted a premiere party for it!

Now let me get this straight -- that's ex Secretary of State Baker, from the Reagan White House?! Helping produce a liberal slanted attack movie on Bush and the Republicans?! Who pissed this guy off? I've heard he doesn't like father or son Bush, but he's willing to throw his entire party under the bus to get his pound of flesh?!

What an a**hole! This clown rates right up there with these whiny bloggers (including Rush and Ann) who were going to vote Democrat or not at all if Huck won the nomination. They should rename the GOP, the "cut off your nose to spite your face" party!

Unbelievable!

 Recount review

Sadly, with such a contentious election cycle in progress, we are dealing with attacks from the liberal film industry. But not only with anti-war films (which bomb at the box office), we now have an HBO film about the Florida recount debacle coming out.

In the St. Pete Times this morning, media writer and erstwhile opinion writer Eric Deggans reviews the film with the predictable glowing results. The paper is a shameless liberal rag, and its writers dutifully toe the company line.

Deggans admits in his review that the movie is skewed to paint Gore as an ideological purist, while the Bush team are a bunch of unrepentant street fighters.

Naturally, local election official, Katherine Harris, suffers the worst of it as portrayed by eerie look-a-like Laura Dern. Deggans describes Harris as "an overmatched functionary committed to delivering the state for Bush while constantly distracted by her own pride and idiosyncrasies." Interesting take on a woman he probably never covered as "TV reviewer" for the paper. Suppose he got his opinion of her from the editorial page of the Times? Yeah, me too.

Naturally the film is composed of supposed conversations between the nasty Republicans and generously offered recollections from the poor, politically pure Dems. How much more fair could that be?

Deggans ends up saying he like the film hoping it would shame the state into fixing its problematic election system. Like I had any doubt a screeching liberal would enjoy a Bush bashing movie. duh

So let me say this about all that:

The butterfly ballot used in the state is so simple anyone should have been able to vote correctly. Anyone who can't figure out how to vote, shouldn't be voting. The ballots have big, bold lines that go from the name to the punch spot. How difficult is that? And if you are having problems, you can ask for assistance. Everyone knows that. Again, how hard is that?

Finally, the votes were recounted THREE times! Bush won each time. And in no recount were the absentee military votes counted which would have been overwhelmingly in Bush's favor.

Bush won. Gore lost.

Get over it!

 Huck update

We are getting Huck PAC up and going, and scheduling events with candidates as well as assisting with mailers, endorsements, and other forms of helping. I’m also meeting with key activists around the country to discuss getting conservatives engaged and focused on the elections.

We are working to get our website a reliable source of good information and inspiration. We welcome your input and views on that, but starting today, will be making sure that there are fresh updates on the site each day. We want the website to be an ongoing conversation and community where our folks get together and exchange views and news as well as hear what’s happening in the field.

Some of you heard that I had to withdraw from running the Boston Marathon and worried that I had a serious injury. Not at all. I’m running, just not able to cover distances of more than about 5-7 miles until I get some knee issues worked out, which I am working on with some exercises, orthotics, and therapy when I find time for it. It’s nothing serious—runners know it as “runner’s knee” which involves overstretched IT bands in the leg that affect the knee. It is frustrating of course, but not debilitating.

I’m speaking in Las Vegas today to a convention, then off to Montana to help raise funds for a Christian school and later to help a GOP candidate for Lieutenant Governor who chaired our Montana effort. Then off to Alabama to help raise funds for a wonderful Christian ministry to children in Dothan. In the meantime, I’m frantically working on my 6th book to meet a deadline that will get the book to the market just before Thanksgiving. I’ll have more information about it coming soon. I’m excited about the book because it’s about YOU—how ordinary Americans took an unknown and underfinanced candidate and took him to a 2nd place finish in the Presidential primary and how it has changed the dynamics of the election process forever.

There are many major things in the wings for the near future that we’ll be announcing on the website as soon as we can. Let us keep hearing from you. Tell us what is happening in your area. What are people feeling and thinking about the future of our nation? It’s sure encouraging to hear from you. Janet and I are so grateful for your support for Huck PAC and the candidates we hope to feature.

Yours for a VERTICAL America!

Mike Huckabee
